Chanderpaul’s hundred saves Jaguars

The Guyana Jaguars, defending champions of the Windies Professional Cricket League, managed to steer their way clear of what could have been a loss against a very game Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Warner Park on Sunday.

After piling on a massive 412-9, the Hurricanes put real pressure on the Jaguars, bowling them out for 210 before asking the defending champions to follow on, something they did successfully, batting for time until stumps on the final day, closing the innings on 305-7, a lead of 103.

The Leewards’ first innings total was built on the back of an all-round batting performance, that included 91 from Montcin Hodge, 82 from Keacy Carty, 56 from Jahmar Hamilton, and 52 from Terence Ward.

In reply, the Jaguars had to recover from 53 for 6 to make it to 206 all out, largely due to Vishaul Singh’s 97.

Ward proved the problem for the Jaguars, bagging 4-48 to keep the Jaguars, 202 runs in arrears. At 53-2, at the start of Sunday’s final day, the Jaguars, still 152 runs in arrears, needed to bat through the day to ensure the Hurricanes did not come up with a famous win at Warner Park in St Kitts. 

Their survival came from the bat of Shivnarine Chanerpaul, who score 109 to pull the Jaguars from the fire. The veteran batsman scored his runs fairly quickly, amassing the total from 147 deliveries, almost seemingly in a bid to turn a certain draw into a winning position.  

Anthony Bramble ended on 57 not out.
