President David Granger on Monday expressed condolences over the passing of Sandra Jones, who up to the time of her death, served as a Commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Jones was also a Commissioner on the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the public service.

“The Head of State recognises Ms Jones as a patriotic Guyanese who lived a life committed to service to her country,” a statement from the Ministry of the Presidency (MoTP) said.

Jones, who was born on July 15, 1946, served as a Consultant in Human Resources Management and was awarded the Golden Arrow of Achievement in 2016 in recognition of her long and effective service in the field of management consultancy.

She was appointed Commissioner to GECOM in 2012 by Granger – the then Leader of the Opposition – upon the death of Robert Williams, a Commissioner.

In 2015, upon the establishment of the COI into the Public Service by the President, Jones was appointed as a Commissioner given her skill set and long-standing experience in the field. As recent as October, she served on the Government’s negotiation team for talks between Government and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) for wages and salary increases for 2017.

The President extends heartfelt sympathy to her siblings Mrs Myrtle Jones-Carter, Mrs Friedel Jones-Glasgow, Mr Errol Jones, Mr Orrin Jones, Mr Paul Jones, Mr Ronald Jones, Mr Andrew Jones, her nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends – the MoTP said.
