Teen jailed for 2 years, charged with several robberies

An 18-year-West Ruimveldt, Georgetown resident was on Friday sentenced to two years imprisonment for the illegal possession of a gun while he was remanded on a series of armed robbery charges and escaping police custody.

Dwayne Castello appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he admitted that on November 22, 2017, at Middle Road, West La Penitence, he had a .40 pistol in his possession when he is not a licensed firearm holder.

The court heard that on the day in question, the police intercepted and searched a motor car along Middle Road when Castello was found with a woman’s handbag around his neck. The gun was found inside the bag. He was sentenced to two years -jail on this charge.

As it relates to the other charges, it is alleged that on November 3, 2017, at Lama Avenue, Georgetown, he robbed Taig Chatram of an iPhone and other items valued $320,000.

He was further charged with robbing Wes Mathews of a phone and cash totalling $71,000. Additionally, on the same day and location, Castello allegedly robbed Dax Kissoon of a cell phone valued $200,000 and $2,000 cash.

It is also alleged that on November 16, 2017, Castello escaped from the Brickdam Police Station while in police custody. He pleaded not guilty to these charges and was remanded to prison until December 15, 2017.
