Rugby player in stable condition
Guyana’s female rugby player Abioce Heywood, who was injured in a RANs 7s rugby tournament at the weekend in Mexico, is said to be in a stable condition.
Heywood took a hard hit in a match on Sunday and is being treated at a medical institution in Mexico. According to a source close to the family of Heywood, the national player is recovering well, although she is still experiencing pain from the hit.
It is understood that a female physiotherapist of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who travelled with the Guyana team, will remain in Mexico with Heywood and accompany her back home. Heywood is an Officer of the GDF.
Director of Sport Christopher Jones meanwhile, told News Room that the National Sports Commission is fully apprised of the situation, and steps are being taken to aid Heywood’s full recovery.
He said a local medical practitioner has been informed on the diagnosis and he will administer follow-up treatment when the player returns home.
Jones also stated that Heywood would have access to the facilities and personnel at the National Sports Clinic on Homestretch Avenue. Doctors are on call every Tuesday and Thursday and national athletes have access to the services for free.
