Elderly woman killed on Success Public Road

Boodnee Lalijie called ‘Aunty Shirley’ was killed early Wednesday morning (November 29) on the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara after being struck down by a sand truck. The 73-year-old woman was crossing the road and died on the spot.

Eyewitnesses indicated that the truck was speeding at the time of the accident. A police report subsequently noted that the accident occurred at approximately 06:30hrs. The investigation revealed that the victim was in the process of crossing her cattle from south to north when she came in contact with the tray of the lorry.

At the time, the lorry was proceeding west along the southern side of the road and as a result of the impact, she fell and the rear left wheel of the vehicle ran over her head. The 30-year-old driver of East La Penitence, Georgetown was tested negative for alcohol in his system.  He remains in police custody.
