21-Y-0 accused of stealing from media operatives

Twenty-one-year-old Albert DeFreitas Jr. appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged with three counts of simple larceny, including the recent robbery committed on two media operatives on Saturday, November 25th at Battery Road, Kingston Georgetown.

DeFreitas denied that on the day in question at Battery Road, Kingston Georgetown, he stole a quantity of electronic items valued $478,000 property of News Room’s cameraman, Akeem Thomas.

The unrepresented man further denied that on the same day he stole a handbag valued $4,000, a makeup bag worth $10,000 along with $7,000 cash property of Ramona Luthi, a reporter.

According to reports, Luthi and her fiancé, Thameshwar Ramcharran were on a pre-wedding photo shoot with Thomas and the items mentioned in the charge were left inside a vehicle. The perpetrator managed to smash a window to gain entry into the parked car and stole the items.

DeFreitas was arrested by the police after attempting to sell Thomas’ laptop.

The 21-year-old was further charged with stealing a quantity of cologne valued $110,000 and a handbag valued $1,500 from Dexter Cummings on October 19, 2017, at Burnham Street, Georgetown. He also denied this charge.

The Magistrate released DeFreitas on $20,000 bail and adjourned the matter to December 11, 2017.
