Opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Joe Hamilton is questioning the status of the US$50M Hope Beach wind farm project which was highly touted by the government in 2015.

Reports indicate that the project, which was being spearheaded by businessman Lloyd Singh, was slated to see the signing of a power purchase agreement between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and the developer, Guyana Windfarm Inc.

“I passed at Hope there and all they have is bush. No wind farm. So the point is, what you have in every budget presentations is just throwing in things that will go no place, that will not affect the lives of people and will not change the economic circumstances of the people of his country,” Hamilton stated.

The MP also took a swing at Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, pointing out that Nagamootoo had more than two years to make progress on constitutional reform yet he failed to do so.

Hamilton, during his contributions to the budget debates on Monday, criticised the government for its slothfulness in the execution of projects, pointing out that agencies and ministries are still advertising for contracts when monies have been budgeted since the beginning of the year.

“Look at the Minister of Public Security [Khemraj Ramjattan], he is still advertising for contracts in December! Buildings that should have been completed in 2017 and when you say so what and when you fail to utilize public funds, what you do is fail to give service to the citizens of Guyana,” he stated.

When contacted, one of the investors Lloyd Singh declined to offer a comment over the phone and has promised to facilitate an interview with News Room at a later date.
