Venezuelan Capt. beaten to death, Guyanese miner arrested

A Venezuelan boat captain was on Friday afternoon allegedly murdered by a Guyanese miner at the Eteringbang Landing, Region Seven (Cuyuni Mazaruni).

Dead is Owen John, a boat captain of Venezuela. News Room understands that the suspect, David Gaskin is a 37-year-old miner of Kuru Kururu on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Police sources indicated that John and the suspect were imbibing at a local shop called ‘Maria Ozlemerire Viera Da Silva’s’ when an argument erupted. Police say that the suspect wanted to borrow some money from the boat captain but after the request was refused, a physical altercation ensued.

Reports are that the suspect cuffed the Venezuelan to his nose, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect then reportedly dealt him several kicks to his head and body, causing the boat captain to become motionless.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, the man was lying on the ground with blood oozing from his nostrils.  The suspect is in custody and an investigation has been launched.
