A 44-year-old man is now dead after being struck down by a minibus while rendering assistance to a 20-year-old who was chopped to his head.

The incident occurred at Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara about 21:30h Sunday, December 17, 2017.

According to a police statement, there was a misunderstanding over a ‘game of chance ‘ at an entertainment activity, when the 54-year old suspect went to his vehicle (minibus BTT 5707), returned with a cutlass, and chopped Premnauth Basdeo’s head.

It was noted that a group of persons gathered to render assistance to Basdeo including 44-year-old Amit Roy Jairam. But not being satisfied, the driver who is an ex-policeman of Stewartville, WCD, returned to the vehicle and in a “deliberate, reckless and wanton” manner, drove into the crowd.

As a result, he struck down Jairam, Randy Melville, 22 and Mohamed Ahamad, 43.

The victims, all unconscious, were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police confirmed that Jairam succumbed to his injuries while the others are in serious conditions.

The minibus driver is in custody and assisting with the investigation.
