Driver escapes after hitting down cyclist, crashing into canal

Police are searching for a minibus driver who this morning struck down a pedal cyclist on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, crashed into a canal injuring five passengers and escaped from the scene.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of KFC on Vlissengen road at about 08:45hrs today. According to information received, the minibus- BTT 8476 was being driven by Jamal John whose address is unknown.

News Room was told that pedal cyclist, 42-year-old Desmond Grandsaoult of lot 1710 Dedication Place South R/Veldt Park, Georgetown was crossing the road when the speeding minibus came into contact with the rear of his bicycle.

As a result of the impact, the man fell on the road and was ran over by the said minibus, sustaining several injuries. The minibus then ended up in a trench situated on the western side of Vlissengen Road.

The pedal cyclist was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and admitted a patient at the High Dependency Unit at the institution. He is said to be critical.

Five persons who were in the minibus also sustained injuries. They too were taken to the Public Hospital where they were treated and sent away. After the accident, the driver of the minibus fled the scene. It was revealed that checks were made at the city hospitals but he was not found. An investigation is in progress.
