It’s the Christmas season and just as Santa Claus is associated with this time of year, so too is football when the merry season rolls around for Guyanese. The Banks Village Cup football tournament was launched on Wednesday morning at Banks DIH Thirst Park headquarters where teams will compete for the top prize of $800,000.

With the tournament already underway, Banks DIH Limited wanted the public to understand the impetus behind having a tournament that targets villages.

“We know there is an elite tournament going on, but with three quarters of the teams in Guyana not involved we thought it best to get involved and we now have tournament in Linden, Berbice, West Demerara and now the East Coast. So it is our way of helping with the development of football in Guyana,” Communication Manager of Banks DIH, Troy Peters, noted.

Organiser of the event, Esan Griffith, shared some information on what the tournament is about. “The tournament actually started on Tuesday evening and we have seen some fun and excitement; we wanted to have a tournament in the communities and so far we expect a lot of excitement from the 16 teams,” Griffith shared.

The tournament features 16 teams, with first place carting off $800,000, second $400,000, third $200,000 and fourth $100,000. It will continue on Thursday (December 21) at the Victoria Community Centre ground.
