Seventy – three – year old Mengree Dahri known as ‘Gladys’ succumbed to injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday, December 28, 2017, days after she was set on fire at their Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara home.
Police in a statement noted that the 43-year-old suspect set fire to the mattress on which the elderly woman was resting on Christmas Day at around 10:00hrs. She suffered severe burns to her body.
According to the statement, a resident observed smoke emanating from the bottom flat of the two-storey house and upon checking, discovered the victim on a bed which was engulfed in flames. With the assistance of public-spirited persons, she was evacuated and the fire extinguished.
Police said that the suspect is an alcoholic and has admitted to setting the fire.
