Pedestrian killed by alleged speeding driver

A minibus driver is in police custody following the death of 39-year-old Laikram Singh, who was struck down on the Bath Settlement Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB) on December 31, 2017, at around 18:30hrs.

Police said that Singh of 175 Block ‘D’ Bath Settlement, was struck down while crossing the road from south to north; he was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the police report, minibus BVV 2961 was driven by a 25-year-old resident of Belladrum Village, WCB, who was proceeding west along the southern carriageway reportedly at a fast rate of speed when Singh ended up in the path of the vehicle.

The body is presently at the Fort Wellington Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination, which is expected to be done on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.
