Several seriously injured in New Year accident

Several persons were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital in semi-conscious conditions following a head-on collision of two cars on the Meer Zorgen Public Road on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) at around 02:15hrs on January 1, 2018.

Those injured are: 29-year-old Gobin Dannyram of Goed Fortuin, WBD; 28-year-old Amanda Rickyram of La Grange, WBD; 19-year-old Diana Chand of Cemetery Road, Georgetown; 24-year-old Aslam Baksh, also of La Grange and 42-year-old Vijay Bidoor of Goed Fortuin, who was the driver of the HB 1505. The injured are all passengers of the same car.

News Room understands that due to the seriousness of the injuries, they were all transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The accident involved two cars – HC 7477 owned and driven by 24-year-old Ulric Headley of La Grange and HB 1505 owned and driven by 42-year-old Vijay Bidoor of Goed Fortuin.

According to reports reaching News Room, Headley was proceeding south along the eastern side of the said road while Bidoor was proceeding north along the western side and as they were about to pass each other, Headley claimed that Bidoor lost control and ended up in his path.

As a result, the front of Headley’s car collided with the right side of motor car HC 1505.  A breathalyser test conducted on Headley found that his blood-alcohol level was 0.10, which is below the legal limit.

Police, however, could not conduct a breathalyser test on Bidoor due to his severe injuries. Headley remains in police custody as investigations continue.
