The Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) is calling for the support of the entire country as it celebrates the life and work of its founding leader, Dr Cheddi Jagan.

The Party will celebrate the birth centenary of Dr Jagan this year and has promised not to take a partisan approach to the activities in order to accommodate the participation of all Guyanese.

The year 2018 marks the 100th birth anniversary of the late Dr Cheddi Jagan who is widely regarded here as the ‘Father of the Nation’ because of the role he played in fighting for the country’s independence.

PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo at a press conference on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, said he hopes that the entire country participates in the events which are being organised for all year-round.

“Cheddi Jagan means a lot to all Guyana and we will not approach the celebrations in a partisan way because we want all Guyanese, even those who do not support us or never voted for the PPP, to understand a bit more about his life and his struggles and how his ideas and his policies led to a better life for all Guyanese,” Jagdeo said.

Jagdeo is urging social media users to post one-liners and comments about Dr Jagan and even use his image as their profile photos for a period of time desirous to them.

Dr Jagan was born on March 22, 1918, in the rural village of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, and changed the course of the country’s history by first struggling to liberate it from British colonial domination.

He also waged a 28-year-long struggle for the restoration of freedom and democracy, and finally ascended to the Presidency in 1992 until his death in 1997.
