President, Opposition Leader meet on appointment of Chancellor, CJ

President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday morning met to discuss the nomination of candidates for the substantive post of Chancellor of the Judiciary and Chief Justice (CJ) of Guyana.

President Granger has nominated the current Chief Justice of Belize, Justice Kenneth Benjamin to be the Chancellor of Guyana and Acting Chancellor Justice Yonnette Cummings-Edwards as the Chief Justice.

Contacted by News Room for a comment after the meeting, Jagdeo said he asked the President for some time to do due diligence on the nominees.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, accompanied by Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira and Opposition Parliamentarian Priya Manickchand met with President David Granger who was accompanied by Minister of State Joseph Harmon and Attorney General Basil Williams.

The Opposition Leader said the next meeting to continue the discussions will be held on February 7, 2018.
