1,000 house lots allocated in 2017

As the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) is looking to acquire more lands, it has already interviewed and qualified a total of 4,927 persons for house lots.

At a press conference on Thursday, January 4, 2018, Chairman of the CH&PA, Elsworth Williams noted that the authority is looking to conclude its negotiations with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) for lands which it paid $2B for in September 2017.

He disclosed that the plot of land to be handed over by GuySuCo is yet to be decided As the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) is looking to acquire more lands, it has already interviewed and qualified a total of 4,927 persons for house lots.

“We realize how important housing is to the economy and nation-building.”

Persons from each region who has applications at the Ministry were engaged in 2017, the Chairman said. In Region One, he said 52 persons were interviewed and pre-qualified, 140 in Region Two, 458 from Region Three, 3,122 from Region Four, 153 from Region Five, 328 from Region Six, 92 from Region Seven, 149 from Region Nine and 430 from Region Ten.

Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Lelon Saul said 1,131 persons received house lots in 2017. Giving a breakdown, he noted that majority of the residents were from Region Four which accounted for 413.

He also disclosed that an inter-agency has been established to strengthen the planning function of the Housing Authority. It was pointed out that over 66,000 lots were allocated under the previous administration but still 45% remains unoccupied. As such, the CEO said efforts are ongoing to upgrade the infrastructure in those housing schemes which require approximately sixteen billion dollars. (Bibi Khatoon)
