Four in custody for over 55kg cannabis

Two Guyanese and a Venezuelan national were arrested on Saturday, January 6, 2018 after they were caught in a vehicle with forty-two kilograms of compressed cannabis on the Essequibo Coast.

According to the police, the arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation conducted by ranks of the Guyana Police Force at about 17:30h at Back Street,Golden Fleece.

The men are said to be cooperating with investigators and are likely to appear in court on Monday, January 08, 2018.

Meanwhile, at about 17:30hrs also on Saturday, a 23 year-old hire car driver from Burn Bush Dam, East Canje, Berbice was arrested at Weldaad Back Street, West Coast Berbice after the vehicle he was driving, was found with thirteen 13,800 grams of compressed cannabis.

Police said ranks were conducting a routine stop and search operation in the vicinity of the Weldaad Police Station when they observed a motorcar  proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road.
According to the police, on seeing the lawmen,  the car veered north into the Weldaad Back Street.
The vehicle was immediately pursued and detained.

A search revealed seventeen taped parcels containing the illegal substances.

The driver is also said to be cooperating with investigators and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
