Days after he was found dead, the mother of Tevin Parris has revealed that her son received death threats in the past. Natasha Bernard spoke to the media on Thursday, January 11, 2018, where she noted that her son had to take precautions due to the threats he has received.
“One thing I do know is my son was fearful for his life because he would have been getting several threats about coming in at Korner Kick…sometimes he got to switch cars,” the grieving mother said.
The body of 21-year-old Parris was found in his Garnett Street, Newtown Kitty, home with a bullet wound to the head at around 07:40hrs on January 8, 2018.
He was found with an unlicensed 9mm pistol with fourteen live rounds in his right hand, giving the impression that he committed suicide but his family had insisted otherwise. A matching spent shell was also found next to Parris’ body.
Bernard noted that her son endured very trying times in life but he was always God-fearing and she knew from the inception that he did not commit suicide.
“My son was full of life, he had plans, he even paid off for this year semester [at the University of Guyana]; he was on the verge of completing his grandparents’ home at Garnett Street. He had plans, he had a whole lot of plans. He even told me that he was going to make me a rich old woman which he would have already started,” the mother said.
The tearful woman said she last saw her son the night he was murdered and he showed no signs of depression.
A Post Mortem Examination (PME) on Wednesday, January 10, found that he died as a result of a single gunshot wound, where the warhead entered his right nostril and exited the middle of the head. Police said it was not self-inflicted.
Bernard believes her son, whom she described as a very quiet young man, was killed because of greed and envy.
While not naming anyone, the woman said: “people seem to think that we were moving up too fast and for his age, but you see the thing is that he would have lost his father and the family all came together and try to give him what he needed and he works pretty hard.”
A close friend of the slain bar manager has since been arrested in connection with the murder.
