The Guyana Fire Service is investigating the cause of a fire which left four persons homeless at Unity, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara on Monday, January 22, 2018.

News Room understands that the fire that started at about 18:45hrs and completely destroyed the two storey, three-bedroom wooden structure before the Guyana Fire Service arrived at the scene.

While information surrounding the cause of the fire are sketchy at this point, the News Room was informed that the siblings – the boy age 2 and the girl, age 6 – were home alone when the fire started. They were rescued by neighbours without any injuries.

News Room was told that their parents were at a nearby shop at the time of the fire.

The remains of the house following the fire

A relative, Govind Singh told the News Room that following the 2011 general and regional elections, his grandfather was killed in the house by unknown persons. As such, he suspects that something “fishy” played out in relation to the fire.

“In 2011 my grandfather was murdered by unknown persons at the same house just after the 2011 elections and now the kids were in the house this evening when the fire started. Nobody don’t know who actually did it,” Singh said.

Neighbours managed to form a bucket brigade and were able to extinguish the fire. Investigations are ongoing.
