Essequibo’s hopes of winning the elusive double were dashed by Christopher Barnwell, who turned in another top performance to hand Georgetown the Jaguars 50-over title on Wednesday at the National Stadium, Providence.

Three-day champions Essequibo were aiming to add the 50-over title, but Georgetown emerged with a three-wicket win in the final.

Barnwell, who struck 101 on Tuesday to lead the city side to a 128-run over Lower Corentyne in the semi-final at the same venue, scored 69 as Georgetown overcame Essequibo’s 192 in the 44th over, losing seven wickets in the process.

Barnwell’s innings included seven fours and a six. He received support from skipper Leon Johnson (47) and Shemroy Barrington (22). Keemo Paul and Ricardo Adams picked up two wickets each for Essequibo, who posted 192, being bowled out in the 39th over.

Paul topscored with 39, Mark Williams made 33 and Kemol Savory 32, as Jamaican off-spinner Ramaal Lewis picked up 3-34. Barnwell was subsequently named Man-of-the-Match, his second such award in as many days. He was also adjudged Most Valuable Player of the competition.
