‘Gross disrespect’ meted out to media by GDF – GPA
Following the media walkout at the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) Annual Officer Conference, the country’s sole press association body is urging that the Force treat its members with more respect.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 25, 2018, the Guyana Press Association (GPA), headed by Nazima Raghubir, said it firmly stands with media workers who stood up against the gross disrespect meted out against them.
The Association reminded the GDF of the importance of the media and urged that its members be treated better.
GPA also expressed that it is unfortunate that the GDF continues to engage the media in this manner even after repeated attempts to engage and work towards a better relationship.
“The GPA uses this opportunity to place on record its letter of January 15th, 2018 which extends an opportunity to the GDF for more frequent engagements. To date, the GDF has not acknowledged receipt of this correspondence,” the Association stated.
Some 20 media workers representing at least 10 media entities walked out of the GDF Headquarters following a series of discourteous events which caused them to arrive late to the Conference it was invited to provide coverage.
