A $78.9 million contract has been awarded to S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services for the construction of the roundabout at Kitty, Georgetown.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon announced at a post-cabinet press briefing on Friday (January 26, 2018) that the contractor and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure – the agency overseeing the project – will soon sign off on the contract, paving the way for the works to commence.

“Over the last four or five months, work was being done on the ground; the pipes and culverts. In fact, the road was closed for quite a period for those works to take place… careful attention [was] paid to that. So that was undertaken and completed and now basically what we are doing is the top,” he explained.

Harmon estimated that the construction works will last about six months.

The decision to construct a roundabout at this busy junction was made after a sinkhole was formed nearby.

The roundabout will reduce waiting and stoppage time for motorists heading to the East Coast of Demerara and those using Carifesta Avenue, Vlissengen Road, and the Kitty Public Road.
