Sparta Boss had a tough go on Saturday evening when the inaugural Magnum Mash Cup kicked off at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue. Both teams had realistic chances of scoring, but Sparta Boss was the more composed and attacking side.

Dennis Edwards did provide a spark in the 10th minute with a superb strike that rattled the back of the net. Edwards’ goal would prove to be the only difference between the two sides as Sparta Boss looked a bit rusty in their opening match.

Ansa McAl All-stars looked solid, starting the night’s action with a 2-0 win against Channel Nine Warriors. Delroy Dean was in form, scoring both of the goals for the title sponsors of the event with strikes in the fifth and 15th minutes.

Meanwhile, Jermaine and Family Silver Bullets out of Linden had an easy go on the opening night and recorded the biggest margin of victory of the evening.

Silver Bullets cruised to a 5-0 win over Kingston who leaked goals during the entire game. While Kingston attacked their defence was horrendous and Silver Bullets kept firing away and should have probably had a bigger margin of victory.

Jermaine Samuels had a double in the fifth and 17th minutes, while D. Freeman, Omar Williams and Damion Williams scored goals in the 10th, 13th and 16th minutes respectively.

One of the more interesting games of the evening was Gold is Money versus a debuting National Rugby side, who fell 0-2 to the more seasoned campaigners. Randolph Wagner notched the game’s first goal with a strike in the fifth minute, while Hubert Pedro sealed the deal in the 16th.

While the Rugby side had some flashes of good play it was obvious the squad will need some time to adjust to this format of football against some of the best teams in the country.

In other results, MBK All-stars drew 1-1 with Broad Street, Team Extreme topped Sophia 2-1, Bent Street won via walkover, Showstoppers won via walkover, Tigerbay topped Hustlers 3-1 and NK Ballers drew 2-2 with California Square.
