Imran Khan is looking to once again rise to the top of the 13-second class at this weekend’s ‘King of the Strip’ Drag Race Meet at the South Dakota Circuit. And the West Coast Demerara-based driver is sending an ominous warning to his competitors ahead of the first Drag meet of the year.

Powering a Toyota AT-150, Khan has been a dominant force in the 13-second class, winning the event three times over the last couple of years.

He was dethroned at the last meet owing to an infringement, but the Windsor Forest-based driver is coming full throttle to regain what he believes is rightfully his.

“This time around we’re hoping to regain our title. This time around we’re coming back for it; the last time we had a little mishap, but we got that sorted out and this time around we’re coming better and proper,” Khan said.

While he is expecting stiff competition from his rivals, Khan is not at all daunted by the prospects, but rather he is confident that he will be the one laying hands on the trophy when the smoke has disappeared.

“On the day you just have to go out with your ‘A’ game and drive and do your best. Good luck to all the competitors and a special message ‘all who have their eyes on the 13-second trophy they have to get past me first,” Khan boasted.

Questioned about his chances of possibly moving up to the 12-second class in the future, Khan said: “Financially wise we cannot do that at the moment, in terms of upgrading the car. We will just compete in the 13-second for now until we get a good sponsor.”

Sunday’s event is being organised by the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club in partnership with Tropical Shipping. It will get underway at 09:00h and admission to the venue is $1,000 for adults and $500 for children.

It is being sponsored by Stag, Mohamed’s Enterprise, E-Networks, BM Soat, Prem’s Electrical, Rent A Tent, White Boy Auto Spares, Windjammer, Samaroo’s Investments, Trans Pacific, Special Auto, Ramchand’s Auto Body, Nexus, Palm Court and JR Burgers.

The organisers are urging patrons to keep the racing for the track and don’t drink and drive.
