Cop shoots at bandits in Charlestown

An armed Police Constable who was stationed at the Charlestown Post Office gave chase and fired a shot at two bandits who had earlier robbed a minibus driver and a conductor at Drysdale and High Streets, Charlestown Georgetown on Thursday, February 8, 2018.

News Room understands that minibus driver, 43-year-old Rakesh Seegobin, and his conductor, 22-year-old Ashiva Singh parked minibus BLL 2333 (Zone 42) on the eastern side of the road when two men on a bicycle, one armed with a gun, attacked them at around 10:30hrs.

Seegobin was robbed of $8,000 cash and Singh was robbed of his black wallet and $1,000 in cash.

News Room was told that the bandits ran north along High Street and a Police Constable, who was armed with a .38 revolver and six live rounds gave chase.

Reports indicate that the suspect with the firearm, who was on foot, turned around and pointed the gun at Constable who in turn drew his service revolver and discharged a round in the direction of the suspects.

The men managed to escape east into Princes Street; the area was checked but the suspects were not found and no blood was seen in the immediate area. It is not known if any of the suspects were hit.

Investigations are ongoing.
