    Man remanded for brutalising wife

    A 34-year-old man has been remanded to prison for brutalizing his reputed wife, 44-year-old Christina Totaram.

    The suspect, Gladstone Simmons appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce on Monday, February 12, 2018, where he pleaded not guilty to the offence of wounding causing actual bodily harm.

    He did not have legal representation and was remanded until February 26, 2018.

    News Room first reported that Simmons on January 21, 2018, struck his reputed wife several times about her body with a piece of iron, leaving her with a broken arm and several injuries.

    During an interview with News Room, the battered woman, who is also a mother of three children from a previous marriage, noted that on the day, the man began beating her while accusing her of conversing with another man via telephone.

    He later found out that it was one of his colleagues who was trying to make contact with him. The man, she alleged also took her to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he told doctors that she was drunk and ended up in a fight.

    He was taken into police custody on January 31, 2018.
