A woman and her 19-year-old daughter were on Friday charged with trafficking almost six pounds of cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on February 14, 2018.

Rachael Narine and her mother, Kavita Persaud appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where they pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), Konyo Sandiford told the court that the teenager was an outgoing passenger destined to travel to the USA when she was searched and the illicit substance discovered in her handbag.

She said the young lady and her mother, who had accompanied her to the airport, were taken into police custody where they subsequently confessed to the crime.
The women were remanded until February 22, 2018.
