Former policeman, 26-year-old Jason Harry – the alleged mastermind in the carjacking ring – was granted bail after he pleaded not guilty to being involved in the illegal activity.

Harry of Kuru Kururu, East Bank Demerara appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman today, charged with five counts of receiving stolen cars and removing their chassis numbers.

The ex-cop was released on $200,000 bail on each charge.

It is alleged that between August 17, 2017, and February 9, 2018, Harry collected stolen vehicles belonging to Shivrajie Narine and Samuel Munroe. The vehicles, a Toyota Spacio bearing registration number PNN 1811 and a Toyota Allion PMM 7517 were valued $1.7M and $2.9M, respectively.

It is further alleged that between December 8, 2017, and February 10, 2018, Harry received a stolen Toyota Fielder HC 6999. This vehicle was the property of Elizabeth Martin and was valued $2.9M.

Then, between December 12, 2017, and February 10, 2018, it is alleged that Harry received a stolen Toyota Allion PVV 6691 valued to the tune of $2.3M which belonged to Tricel Powers.

Lastly, the ex-policeman was charged with receiving a stolen Toyota Spacia PVV 9742 valued $2.5M and the property of Dellon Skedel. This allegedly occurred between December 15, 2017, and February 10, 2018.

Harry was also charged with changing chassis numbers on the stolen vehicles. On Monday, two welders were slapped with a similar charge. See story here: http://newsroom.gy/2018/02/26/father-son-charged-in-carjacking-ring-granted-bail/

Police Prosecutor Arwin Moore had strongly opposed to bail being granted on the grounds that more charges are expected to be laid against Harry.

The Magistrate, however, overruled the objections and the matter was adjourned to April 12, 2018.

Editor’s note: The former policeman is currently on remand at the Lusignan prison for armed robbery.
