3 years jail for man who brutalised wife with iron

A 34-year-old man was sentenced to thirty-six months in prison on Tuesday by Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Providence Magistrate’s Court for brutally beating his reputed wife with a piece of iron.

The incident occurred on January 21, 2018.

Gladstone Simmons made his fourth appearance where he pleaded to the charge of wounding causing actual bodily harm. He was unrepresented.

The man was shown the photos of the injuries he inflicted on his reputed wife, 44-year-old Christina Totaram after which he apologised for his actions.

News Room first reported that Simmons struck his reputed wife several times about her body with a piece of iron, which left her with a broken arm and several injuries.

During an interview with News Room, the battered woman, who is also a mother of three children from a previous marriage, had noted that on the day, the man began beating her after he accused her of conversing with another man via telephone.

He later found out that it was one of his colleagues who was trying to make contact with him.

The man, she alleged then threw half a bottle of alcohol into her mouth while she was helpless, before taking her to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he told doctors that she was drunk and ended up in a fight.
