Bandits killed in shootout with police


A police team, commanded by a Senior Detective in Berbice, killed two gunmen and apprehended two of four others shortly after they allegedly executed an armed robbery in the Berbice River on Friday, March 2, 2018.

A police report identified the dead men as 37-year-old Indarjit ‘Danny’ Sham of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje and 21-year-old Amar ‘Punk’ Bissoon, of Adelphi Settlement, East Canje.

Their bodies are at the Arokium Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

According to the police report, an investigation revealed that about 05:00hrs on Friday, six male suspects, two of whom were armed with guns, went to a ranch house at Potocco Creek,Berbice River, held three male laboures at gunpoint and stole 23 sheep, 15 ducks, a solar panel, a radio, a quantity of rope, and other valuables, which they subsequently loaded on a boat and escaped.

The stolen items belong to a 50-year-old businessman of Vryheid, West Canje, Berbice.

Shortly after the robbery, the police was informed and a team commanded by a Senior Detective acted on intelligence and intercepted a boat with the two suspects who are in custody, in the Berbice River.

Based on further information, the ranks proceeded to a location where the robbery allegedly occurred and found all of the animals with their legs bound and the other stolen property loaded inside of a camouflaged aluminum boat.

Soon after the lawmen disembarked their boat, they were confronted by the now dead men who discharged several rounds at them; the police report noted that the officers quickly adapted tactical positions, returned fire and fatally wounded the men who have been positively identified by the victims as members of the gang who committed the robbery.

A twelve-gauge pump action shotgun, a .32 pistol, eleven live cartridges, and five live.32 rounds were found in possession of the bandits. Three spent cartridges and a .32 spent shell were retrieved at the scene.

Investigators are making stringent efforts to apprehend the other suspects.
