A 21-year-labourer was on Monday sentenced to 50 months jail for the armed robbery committed on an off-duty police officer on March 2, 2018.

Darren Baley appeared before City Magistrate Judy Latchman and confessed that on the day in question at Hinck Street, Georgetown while being armed with a pair of scissors, he robbed Police Constable, Mahendra Donaught of an LG cell phone valued $25,000, a wallet valued at $2,000 and $240 cash.

The unrepresented man told the court that it was a case of mistaken identity and thought the victim was someone he knows from the interior.

Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore told the court that on the day in question, the cop was walking along Hinck Street when Baley approached him and held a pair of scissors to his neck.

Moore noted that the defendant took away the items mentioned in the charge and made good his escape; however, he was arrested under the Stabroek Market clock as he attempted to sell the items.

Before passing sentence, Magistrate Latchman told the defendant, “Do not steal, do not rob…people work hard for their stuff and you should not go around stealing.”
