More than 40 women in Linden are now participating in an extended Computer Literacy programme that covers the tools of computing including the entire Microsoft Office suite.  The twelve-week evening course got underway on Tuesday at the Linden Technical Institute (LTI), a release from the Ministry of Public Telecommunications noted today.

Training coordinator of the Ministry, Donnella Collison said that the course is part of the Public Telecommunications Ministry’s ICT national training schedule, geared towards the goal of creating an internet-savvy population.  The LTI is an active partner in the bauxite mining town.

“Ms. Collison, herself a part of the Ministry’s Industry and Innovation Department, said that the extended Computer Literacy programme was deliberately set to begin this week that commemorates Women and their achievements.  It is also a pilot project that will be replicated in most other regions of Guyana, tailored to the specific needs of each set of residents,” the release noted.

This is a direct spin-off of the first literacy programme held in Linden last January for an advocacy group called Women on a Mission.

At the end of those five days, the participants asked for more substantial computer training for homemakers and business owners who all have similar needs to fulfill for their businesses and school-aged children.

In the meantime, the MoPT has just issued an Open Call to girls between the ages of 12 and 18 to sign up to learn Programming and Coding.  Interested persons should go to the ministry’s Website, www.mopt.gov.gy or the Ministry of Public Telecommunications on Facebook for the form and more information.
