36% increase in robbery with violence – Police stats

The Guyana Police Force says it has recorded a decrease in serious crimes last month, however, there is an increase in the instances of robbery with violence and in cases where firearms were used as well as when no weapons were used.

According to statistics released by the Force today, there is an 18% decrease in serious crimes at the end of February 2018 relative to the same period last year.

There is a 39% decrease in murder, 41% decrease in robbery under arms where instruments other than firearms were used, 33% decrease in larceny, 25% decrease in rape, 21% decrease in burglary and a 19% decrease in break and enter and larceny.

However, the Force said there was a 2% increase in robbery under arms where firearms were used, a 31% increase in robberies where no instruments were used and 36% increase in robbery with violence.

As it relates to the recorded murders for the year, the GPF said there were six disorderly, one domestic, two based on a robbery and two known; police said there were no execution-style murders for the year thus far.

Further, the GPF said it seized 24 illegal firearms, compared to 22 for the corresponding period last year. The firearms confiscated include 15 pistols, 4 revolvers, 4 shotguns and one Sun-Martine.
