Man drowns trying to save children in boat accident

Tragedy struck on Friday afternoon when Latchman Benjie lost his life while trying to save his two children after their boat capsized in the Essequibo River.

His body was found early this morning in the Kamarang River. News Room understands that Benjie of Jawalla Village, Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven, was returning to Waramadong where he was living for the past four years.

He was returning from his farm in a “wood skin” boat with his two children, who are both under the age of 10.

News Room understands that a man from the area, where the boat sank, heard the screams of Benjie’s two young daughters, who were trying to come out of the river.

The man rescued the two girls but Benjie was nowhere to be found. Reports indicate that Benjie tried to push the girls as far as he could to the corner.
