The Guyanese contingent left today for the 2018 Carifta Games scheduled for Easter weekend in The Bahamas.

At a special press briefing at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Office in Alberttown, Georgetown just before the team’s departure, President of the association, Aubrey Hutson was pleased to have selected the largest contingent of 18 athletes for the first time in Guyana’s history; he is very optimistic about the team’s success.

“We are proud to have selected what we believe to be the largest contingent for Carifta and I’m very optimistic that we will do well, so to the athletes I just want to wish them well,” Hutson noted.

Coach of the team, Glenton Pantlitz opined that it will be the best Carifta team to date with the level of talent accumulated for the games.

In addition, the newest national coach, Niall Stanton believes that the team has done all they can to prepare for the games.

“I think preparation was good; we did what we could do and with regard to acclimatising, we had the athletes training at different time periods during camp but it’s Caribbean so I don’t expect much of a difference… we have 18 athletes and I think we are capable of bringing back 18 medals,” Stanton shared.

The team departed Guyana at 14:30hrs for the event where they won the most medals last year and finish fourth on the table.
