COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Boxer Lewis registers win on day one

Guyanese boxer Collin ‘Superman’ Lewis recorded a win in the Round of 32 on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Lewis won on points against St Lucia’s Nathan Ferrari in the Men’s 64kg Class on Thursday.

Four of the five judges scored the three-round contest in Lewis’ favour. The judges scored the fight 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 27-30 and 29-28 in favour of Lewis.

Lewis is now slated to fight South African Sinethemba Blom in the Round on 16 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Squash player Sunil Seth was the only other bright spot for Guyana on the opening day, winning his Men’s Singles Round of 64 game against Shawn Simpson on Barbados 3-1. Seth prevailed 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4.

He however, lost 3-0 to Australian Rex Hedrick in the Round of 32, 4-11, 2-11, 3-11.

Jason Ray-Khalil suffered a straight-set defeat in the Round of 64, losing 3-11, 10-12, 2-11 to Campbell Grayson on New Zealand, while Mary Fung-A-Fat and Taylor Fernandes were beaten in the Women’s Singles Round of 32.

Fung-A-Fat lost 5-11, 2-11, 4-11 to Samantha Cornett of Canada, while Fernandes lost 5-11, 7-11, 3-11 to Tesni Evans of Wales.

In the table tennis team competition, Guyana suffered 3-0 defeats in both the Men’s and Women’s segments to England. 

In the Men’s competition, Shemar Britton was outplayed 5-11, 5-11, 6-11 by David McBeath; Christopher Franklin lost 4-11, 3-11, 4-11 to Samuel Walker; and Nigel Bryan and Britton suffered a 1-11, 7-11, 5-11 defeat to Paul Drinkhall and McBeath in the Doubles. 

In the Women’s segment, Natalie Cummings lost 5-11, 5-11, 3-11 to Tin-Tin Ho; Trenace Lowe was outdone 2-11, 9-11, 6-11 by Kelly Sibley; and Priscilla Greaves and Cummings lost 1-11, 5-11, 3-11 to Maria Tsaptsinos and Sibley in the Doubles.

In swimming, Andrew Fowler competed in the 50m butterfly event and finished third in heat two with a time of 27.23s. 

However, 54 swimmers competed in the event and Fowler finished 44th out of the lot, which means that the lanky swimmer will not move to the next round that will feature the top 16 times. 

Jamila Sanmoogan will compete next in the 50m freestyle event.
