Natural Gas Pipeline Project confirmed

Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson has announced that Government will be moving ahead with its plan to bring natural gas from the oil reservoirs offshore to be used for power generation.

“It has been confirmed that it is feasible. It has been confirmed that it will be an absolute benefit to the country, has been confirmed and I can say this and I will go out on a limb and say the numbers are all sub-US 10 cents per megawatt hour,” Minister Patterson said.

Patterson told News Room today that an area along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) has been identified to land the pipelines.  He said Government is in talks with ExxonMobil to run the pipelines from offshore to onshore.

Now that a site has been identified, Minister Patterson said further technical studies are needed. The usage of the natural gas to generate electricity could result in lower costs for the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and ultimately cheaper energy for consumers.
