Private and public media workers today commenced a two-day training to sharpen their skills on parliamentary reporting.

The exercise is being facilitated by the Guyana Press Association (GPA) in collaboration with the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) and the Canadian High Commission. It is being conducted in the Chambers of the National Assembly.

GPA President Nazima Raghubir, in delivering brief remarks during the simple opening ceremony, explained that one of the main objectives of the exercise is to ensure that the ordinary man truly understands what is being reported when he/she reads or listens to the news on parliamentary affairs.

Raghubir said journalists should ask themselves questions such as “am I really serving these citizens” or “am I providing details to allow them to make informed comments”.

Throughout the training, media workers will get a better understanding of the parliamentary standing orders as well as the dos and don’ts of the coverage of parliamentary committees and debates.

There will also be discussions with Members of Parliament (MPs) Cathy Hughes and Gail Teixeira – both of whom were also journalists.
