Guyanese boxer Collin ‘Superman’ Lewis lost to South African Sinethemba Blom in the Round of 16 of the Men’s 64kg Class at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, on Sunday.

Lewis, who had impressed with victory over St. Lucian Nathan Ferrari in the Round of 32 on the opening day of the Games on Thursday with a 4-1 win, suffered a similar margin of defeat to Blom.

Only one judge scored the three-round contest in Lewis’ favour on Sunday, 29-28. The other four judges had the fight 29-28, 30-27, 30-26, 29-28 in favour of Blom.

Lewis felt the full force of a left hook from Blom, which landed below the waist and clearly hurt the Guyanese a minute into Round Two.

Despite the referee ordering Blom to lift his punches several times, the South African continued to go at Lewis, before landing the cruel blow, and being called for a foul. Lewis recovered and continued the fight, but the tactic clearly worked for Blom.

Meanwhile, Guyanese Keevin Allicock will fight in the Round of 16 of the Men’s 52kg tomorrow (Monday) against Scotland’s Reece McFadden.
