Private Sector wants sugar refinery, distillery

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has formally proposed that the Government pursue the establishment of a sugar refinery and a distillery in an effort to keep the industry viable.

Last week, the PSC submitted an Action Plan for the Sustainable Development of Guyana to the Government. The plan covers a myriad of issues facing the local business sector.

Regarding the sugar sector, the PSC said the privatization and diversification of the sugar industry should see ethanol production from sugarcane.

The PSC also said there is a need for cogeneration and the development of new products such as Demerara Gold for value-addition.

Further, the Commission recommended the expansion of the operations at the Blairmont Sugar Estate.
