Woman killed in accident, driver was unlicensed

A 52-year-old woman of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was killed on Friday afternoon after the minibus in which she was travelling turned turtle and collided with an electrical pole.

The incident occurred at about 17:45hrs.

According to the police, the minibus BWW 4542 was driven by a 24-year-old unlicensed driver of Sophia, allegedly at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle at Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

In a video circulated on social media, passengers were seen strewn on the parapet as public-spirited citizens rushed to render assistance.

The woman, Yvonne Mohan and other passengers were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Center, where Mohan was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two passengers were transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and admitted.

The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
