Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royal recorded close wins on a day that produced 805 runs in the Indian Premier League.

Kings XI Punjab won by four runs against Chennai Super Kings after making 197-7, and Rajasthan Royals won by 19 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore after making 217-4.

MS Dhoni’s 79* off 44 balls was in vain

In Chandigarh, Chris Gayle cracked 63 off 33 balls in his first match this season as Kings XI Punjab put up a huge total. KL Rahul contributed 37 as SN Thakur and Imran Tahir took two wickets each.

MS Dhoni then struck a 44-ball 79 not out, but Chennai Super Kings fell short, despite a six off the last ball. Ambati Rayudu made 49 off 35. Gayle was named Man-of-the-Match.

Sanju Samson made 92* off 45 balls

In Bengaluru, Sanju Samson struck 10 sixes in 92 not out off 45 balls as Rajasthan Royal posted 217-4. Ajinkya Rahane made 36 off 20, and Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler played cameos of 27 and 23 to boost the total.

Chris Woakes and Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets each for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who made 198-6 in reply. Virat Kohli made 57 off 30, Mandeep Singh 47 not out and Washington Sundar 35.

Tomorrow (Monday), Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils will face off from 10:30h.
