Minister of Social Cohesion, with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton, on Monday extended congratulations to athlete Troy Doris on his astonishing achievement at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Representing Guyana, Doris copped the much coveted Triple Jump gold medal with a leap of 16.88m.

“Seeing the Golden Arrowhead being hoisted as the sounds of our National Anthem soared throughout that stadium, for the world to see, was surreal. I am sure that like myself and His Excellency, President David Granger, all of Guyana is extremely happy and proud of this achievement,” Dr. Norton said.

Doris is the first Guyanese to cop a gold medal for a Triple Jump at the Commonwealth Games.

However, back in 2002, Guyana’s Aliann Pompey claimed the Women’s 400m title at the Games, which were held in England.

“At this, the 21st staging of the Commonwealth Games, Guyana was represented in various disciplines by a contingent of 20. These men and women have poured their hearts into representing their country at various disciplines, and like the President said, we are extremely proud of them all,” Dr. Norton said.

Dr. Norton believes that with intensified efforts, Guyana is well on its way to amaze the world at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
