Unlicensed driver charged with death of passenger

A 24-year-old minibus driver was today charged with the death of 52-year-old Yvonne Mohan, who died during an accident at Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara on Friday, April 13, 2018.

Ronald Balgobin of Sophia Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on the day in question, he drove minibus BWW 4542 in a dangerous manner which resulted in the death of Mohan.

He was remanded to prison until May 7, 2018.

Meanwhile, Balgobin was subsequently taken before Magistrate Renita Singh and charged with driving the without a license, breach of insurance and giving false information to the police on April 13, 2018.

He pleaded not guilty to the three charges and was released on $75,000 bail.

Following the accident, passengers were seen strewn on the parapet as public-spirited citizens rushed to render assistance.
