Driver in #58 fatal accident remanded to prison
Twenty-five-year-old Nilendra Premnauth known as “Avi”, of Grant 1802 Crabwood Creek Corentyne, Berbice today appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Premnauth was not required to plead to the charge, which alleged that on April 16, he drove motorcar, HC 2217 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of 52-year-old Soorjanie Surjraj, of Crabwood Creek.
The dead woman’s daughter, 15-year-old Neha Sukhra and mother, 70-year-old Khemnie Chanchal were also injured in the accident, when the accused slammed into a parked lorry on the Number 58 Public Road.
The elderly woman remains hospitalized with a broken foot while the teenager was discharged from the hospital.
The family was on their way home from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport when Premnauth allegedly fell asleep while driving.
The young mechanic, who works part-time as a taxi driver, was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on April 27, 2018.
