Futsal activities suspended at National Gymnasium

Fans will have to wait a while before futsal action resumes in the city, as there is an indefinite suspension on all futsal activities at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

This is according to Director of Sport Christopher Jones. The move stemmed from an incident at the final of the Corona sponsored competition at the indoor venue last weekend.

During the half-time of the championship game between Sparta Boss and Bent Street gunshots rang out, sending a packed arena into a frenzy and forcing the abandonment of the night’s action.

“As a direct result of the incident that occurred, all Futsal tournaments at the National Gymnasium are suspended until further notice. This decision will be confirmed by the board at the next board meeting,” Jones told a section of the press this week.

At the time of the incident Sparta Boss were ahead 2-0, with goals from Gregory Richardson and Jeremy Garrett.

The organisers have since confirmed that they will be discussing the way forward for the final with the relevant stakeholders of the tournament.
