President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K.A. Juman Yassin, is happy for the success of Troy Doris, but believes the triple jumper will need more help in order to have Olympic success in 2020.

Doris was the only Guyanese to medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, copping gold in the Men’s Triple Jump with a winning leap of 16.88 metres in Gold Coast, Australia.

At a press conference on Wednesday where he labelled the overall team performance as “fair”, Yassin highlighted that the USA-based athlete will need even more assistance to move forward in his career.

“We had Troy’s coach at the Games because we believe a Triple Jumper needs his coach with him, but I said that to make the point that now Troy has shown us success in a more tangible way we need to ensure he does this full time,” Yassin said.

“I am urging the Government, the Sports Commission to join with us in supporting Troy; we have not seen anything from them as yet, but we hope this gold medal will be a catalyst for them to come on board. We know he was invited (to come) here next month and we would hope that when he is here we can say that you will be a full time athlete at least until 2020,” Yassin added.
