One dead, 4 injured as alleged drunk driver crashes car

One person is dead and four others are nursing serious injuries after the car they were in careened off the road, crashed into a heap of sand, slammed into a lamppost and landed in a trench at Cromarty Village, Corentyne Berbice, just after midnight.

Dead is 47-year-old Adrian Downer of Fyrish Village; he was a passenger in the Silver Toyota Carina PRR 8753, at the time of the accident.

News Room understands that the 37-year-old driver was highly intoxicated at the time of the accident; he was reportedly speeding and lost control of the vehicle.

Those injured were taken out of the vehicle and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital by public-spirited citizens.

Eyewitnesses told News Room that Downer was already dead when his body was pulled from the wreckage; he was pronounced dead on arrival the at Port Mourant Hospital.

The injured passengers sustained serious head injuries, News Room was informed.

Two of the four injured were transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital while the driver is assisting the police with their investigations.
