Executive member of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Joseph Harmon has announced his candidature for the position of Chair of the party, for which elections will be held at Congress in August 2018.

Harmon, who is also the country’s Minister of State, made the announcement via a brief statement, which was issued to the media this morning.

“I am a member of the Party of longstanding and therefore have indicated that it is my desire and my interest in putting myself up as a candidate for the Chairmanship of the Party,” Harmon noted in his statement.

The current Chairman of the PNC is Basil Williams, who also serves as Guyana’s Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs. The race is expected to be a tight one between the two men, who are both viewed as party favourites.

Williams has been a member of the PNC since in the 1980s.

“The People’s National Congress is an extremely democratic Party. What that means is that biannually we have Congress at which all positions of leadership are for voting and that is from Leader right up to the Central Executives of the Party. That is the democracy, which we practice. So every member of the Party can aspire to the highest office in our party…” Harmon noted in his statement.
